ABOUT SLSS LIPDUB 2024

The Steveston London Lipdub is an annual grad tradition where students of the graduating class lip sync to different songs. This event involves intricate planning and coordination of over 100 individuals. This year, the SLSS Lipdub 2024 successfully featured 125 grads, showcasing our spirit, creativity, and unity.

My responsibilities for this project were extensive, ranging from coordinating over 100 students to filming multiple run-throughs and later editing and animating the video utilizing newly acquired interaction design techniques and Premiere Pro. This project significantly expanded my creative toolbox and enhanced my ability to coordinate large-scale events.

SHARKIE PYGAME DESIGN

This Lipdub scene — also my Final project for my programming class — is my first user interaction design.

Using control keys, the user can control Sharkie to go left right or up while enabling the Sharkie animation to simulate a walking/running movement. When Sprite (sharkie) collides with the mystery boxes, the three words “SLSS” “Lipdub” and “2024” will pop out. While the final effect isn’t super smooth, I’m happy with how it turned out!

Kudos to my teacher Mr T. Ubial, my classmate and ChatGPT for helping me when I got stuck with the code!

FINAL REFLECTION

This year, I had the incredible opportunity to take a leading role in bringing the SLSS Lipdub 2024 to life, a project that featured 125 graduates of Steveston-London Secondary School.

Coordinating such a large-scale event was both challenging and rewarding. From the outset, it required meticulous planning and organization. Alongside my friend and partner Felicia Zhou, we managed the schedules of over 100 students, ensuring that each participant understood their role and choreography. From this, I learned to navigate the complexities of coordinating a large group.

Filming the lip dub involved numerous rehearsals and run-throughs. Each scene had to be carefully choreographed and executed to ensure a seamless final product, which ideally needed to be shot in one take (minimal cuts in post-production). It was a powerful exercise in teamwork, as we all had to rely on one another to make each take better than the last.

The post-production phase was where my technical skills were truly put to the test. Using Premiere Pro and new interaction design techniques, I edited and animated the footage, transforming raw clips into a polished and dynamic video. This experience significantly enhanced my proficiency with editing software and broadened my creative capabilities. It was gratifying to see how my efforts could turn snippets of footage into a coherent and engaging narrative that captured the essence of our graduating class.

In reflecting on the SLSS Lipdub 2024, I am proud of what we accomplished together. The journey from initial planning to the final edit was filled with challenges, learning opportunities, and moments of joy. This experience has left me with not only a richer creative toolbox but also a heightened confidence in my ability to lead and inspire. It was a fitting tribute to our high school years and a project that will always hold a special place in my heart.
